Some Candidates You’ve Never Heard Of – S.O.S. Edition

But hopefully, you will as 2010 kicks off and the midterm elections come stampeding into focus.  Here’s a snapshot of some of the interesting secretary of state races for 2010.  We’ll cover more in the weeks ahead.

Arizona:

Incumbent Secretary of State Ken Bennett is running for his first full term as Arizona’s Republican Secretary of State.  Bennett’s name has been bandied about in some circles as a potential candidate for Governor on the Republican side, but there are so many Republican names in the mix for that race that Bennett probably has figured out he can have a better impact on Arizona building on his record as a state senator with a full term as SOS.

On the Democrat side State Representative Chris Deschene and Sam Wercinski are up and running.  Deschene is in the exploratory phase of his campaign, more a trick of getting around Arizona’s resign to run law, and Wercinski is in official campaign mode.

The Democrats have until August 24th to convince voters who’s better suited to face Ken Bennett in November.  Truth be told, Bennett will be hard to beat as the sitting incumbent, but that’s not reason enough for him to sit back and hope for a an easy victory.

California:

Former NFL wide receiver Damon Dunn is running not for the end zone for but for California Secretary of State against incumbent Democrat Debra Bowen.  By most accounts, California is a no man’s land for cookie cutter GOP candidates, so Dunn’s candidacy just might capture the imagination of voters across the spectrum and vault him into big league status in a new line of work.  Early indications are that Dunn represents a new direction for the Republicans in California that has captured the attention of the party’s leading strategic minds.

Cool Building…Clueless Governor

Iowa Governor Chet Culver gets caught being unprepared for class.

It’s a safe bet that whoever did the governor’s briefing book on this event got an earful.  This episode creates an opportunity for Republicans Christian Fong, Paul McKinley, Christopher Rants, Rod Roberts, and Bob Vander Plaats to paint Culver as not all that engaged, and gives more questions likely to be raised about his management on other issues a better chance at sticking.  Bet Iowans hear about this one once the primary is all settled again.   Of course, they’ll hear about it nonstop prior no doubt.  UPDATE:  Had to replace the original story since the local T.V. station pulled the story off the web…but, you do have the raw footage now…little bit longer, but just as fun.

As Kermit Used To Say

New Hampshire Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Kelly Ayotte is having to deal with inane barbs and silly comparisons from inside and outside her own party.  That must mean she’s the real deal.  According the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee’s website, they’ve issued no fewer than 5 press releases and 1 web video focused on the former attorney general.  Compare that to 3 releases and 1 video for Florida Governor (and also former attorney general) Charlie Crist, and none for current Utah A.G. Mark Shurtleff.  Guess they really do fear that Kelly Ayotte is the future U.S. Senator from New Hampshire.

All the talk and nonsense about her going to Washington, or hosting a fundraiser at the NRSC headquarters on 2nd Street is just that – process driven nonsense that has zero bearing on her skills as a candidate or a policy maker.  Why go to Washington?  Because there are some smart policy and political minds who are worth talking to there.  Why host a fundraiser at the NRSC?  Because it’s the fiscally conservative smart thing to do.  They provide a facility for candidates that cost a whole bucket load less than reserving a room at some hotel or restaurant in DC.  Call it good use of precious campaign funds.

At this point – it looks like the Ayotte narrative will be this:  She’s a sharp and tough lawyer, with a real selfless bent toward public service, connects well with voters and wants what’s best for her home state and her family.  It’s up to the DSCC, and Paul Hodes (on the Dem side), and Ovide Lamontagne – the only other Republican to take real steps to run – to provide their own Ayotte narrative in a credible and effective fashion.
