Martha Coakley’s Foreign Policy Chops

This is just fun.  At least she’s honest about not impacting foreign policy as state A.G.  Though she did take some foreign trips as A.G. didn’t she?

A Cat Fight In Virginia

Via DC Vaquero:

Team Obama got a strong backhand from Democratic legend Mudcat Sanders and they deserve every bit of it.

This is a strong tongue lashing from a guy who has been toiling in the fields of Rural Democrat politics since before most of the “administration experts” have been out of high school,  as a political hack I can relate to organizers on the D side fairly easily, the process is all the same no matter what side you are on and Mudcat is 100% right here.

This story further demonstrates the unfounded arrogance of the White House and the staff there who are attempting to run away from a guy they are appearing in commercials for, Creigh R. Deeds.  Yes, to be fair Creigh ran a very poor campaign but it was not exactly his fault.  The irony here is that if Obama was not governing so far to the left in DC, Deeds would have won the race handily.  The fault for Creigh Deeds upcoming loss in the VA governors race will rest squarely on the shoulders of Barack H. Obama and the administration and they cannot admit that even to themselves.

Oh, there’s much more to read on this one.

New Virginia Governor Spot

The script reads:

“Trillions in new spending.”

“Unprecedented government intervention.”

“Chipping away at your rights.”

“Chipping away at your freedom.”

The voice talent is several steps above what either Bob McDonnell’s or Creigh Deed’s campaign has on their spots, and the ad stands out from the normal flow campaign T.V. spots.  In short – it’s going to stand out amid the normal campaign clutter.

Who’s spot is it?  Watch and see.

10,000 Hispanics and 0 Democrats

And not one Democratic Party operative in sight apparently at the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Richmond, VA.  Why would Democrats want to be at an event like this?  It’s not like they’re in a dog fight of a campaign for governor and need every vote possible.  Republicans were there in force, but no Democrats.  Someone is probably getting yelled at over this one.  See the coverage at Bearing Drift.

The Season of the Epic Fail

Watch below – and you decide if he was being clear.  Totally stealing this from the DC Vaquero.

Wow this is one of the most brutal flip flopping responses to a question by a candidate for Governor that I have ever seen.  What a total mess this guy and his campaign is:

Just watch him squirm and laugh, this video will be shown at candidate training schools for a long time as the best example of how NOT to deal with the media:

There’s so much more to this post than what’s above. Ride over to see the rest at DC Vaquero.

Derailment in New Jersey

Nobody wants this Chris Christie loan thing to have a negative impact on other races in New Jersey – well except for New Jersey Democrats who are getting pummeled all over the state in other state races.  Right now, the Christie campaign strategy is to stay on message talking about Jersey, and not about petty personal issues that really have no bearing – and this loan thing really doesn’t – on the future of the Garden State.

So, expect Democrats (both New Jersey and national), and other ostensibly independent groups to start attempting to turn this act of personal kindness into a corruption issue by piling on the hyperbole.

Increasing the Level of the Snark

Hmmm…there appears to be some friction between the Virginia Democrat blog community and the Democratic Governors Association.  From Virginia’s own Not Larry Sabato:

Hot Tubbing Creigh to the Governor’s Mansion

Does it seem like the Democratic Governor’s Association has gotten quiet since the primary?  Anyone else wondering where they have been?

Well now we have an answer.  Their Executive Director Nathan Daschle is busy leaving blog comments at 6:53 on a weeknight while he is according to his own words: “Sitting in my hot tub in DC”.

Nathan, why don’t you Hot Tub after 9 p.m. and drive across the bridge to the Deeds office and help them phonebank from 7-9 at night if you have nothing else to do?  kthxbai.

The post has generated just a handful of comments from loyal NLS readers.

No where to run

Eventually, Creigh Deeds will run out of places to hide from President Barack Obama.  Again, President Obama is in the state, albeit for an “official” function, and the Democrat standard bearer in the commonwealth is no where to be seen.  Maybe the White House should take Virginia off of its travel itinerary until sometime in late November.

Creigh Deeds probably wishes he had Bob McDonnell’s problem – you know, the President isn’t going to Virginia to campaign for him.

With Jon Corzine tanking in New Jersey, the political President needs something to do…maybe they can call an election in Alaska.

VA Debate Recap

Came across Tony Lee’s comments on the  gubernatorial debate in Virginia between Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds.  This is a definite must read, so I’ll spare you the quick summation.  However, a few thoughts that Lee puts out are either humorous or interesting.

1)  Bob McDonnell is boring.  Or, put another way – Bob McDonnell does not come across as a caricature of himself.  Boring in a Barack Obama sort of way – well before the whole Cambridge P.D. thing at least.

2)  Bob McDonnell (this is the Republican we’re talking about here) is funny.  He’s no Seinfeld, but he has some humor.  Don’t over think it McDonnell campaign.

3) Wouldn’t it be funny if vote rich Northern Virginia put Republican McDonnell over Democrat Deeds on Election Day?  Why is that funny – because Northern Virginia hasn’t been Republican country for Gov candidates since before 2001.

4)  National issues will impact this race – the question remains – which way and for who?

There’s much more to be read – and it is 100% worth your few minutes to read.

More fundraising fun

Mid year is always a great time to find something to project, write, spin, and crow about if you’re a political candidate – because that’s when most states require active political committees to disclose to the state, and the press, who’s been giving them money and how much.  While the actual act of disclosure, gathering contributions, filling out forms required by regulators is very by the book basic – what comes next is more an art than a science.

In some states, the art can begin when the forms/reports are turned in to the appropriate state regulatory agency.  In most states, there’s no room for art since reports must be submitted electronically.  In a few states reports can still be submitted on paper – which in years past has created an opportunity for art.  Try to imagine submitting one page for each contribution you receive – so if a campaign has 7,500 contributions – it turns in a 7,500 plus page report.  Now, anyone who’s dealt with the government knows that if an individual wants a copy of any report, there is usually some kind of per page fee to be paid the report if the info isn’t readily available online.  So there’s one artsy option – how badly does the opposition really want to see the other sides donors.

Another artsy option is all about timing.  Some campaigns like to release their good reports early – to get their own news story.  Other campaigns like to release their good reports late – so they dominate all other reports.  And still others like to wait to see what their opponents do.  And no campaign likes to release bad reports at all.

In the Virginia Governors race Republican nominee Bob McDonnell reports having nearly $5 million cash on hand for the official start of the General Election.  So far, McDonnell, who was unopposed for the GOP nomination, has raised $10.6 million just past the midway point for his campaign.  A nice haul for the former state attorney general in his bid to be the first Republican governor elected in Virginia since 1997.

McDonnell’s Democrat opponent is state senator Creigh Deeds - he has a pet donkey – who won a 3-way primary in June.  Deeds starts the General Election with $2.7 million cash on hand – but that’s just part of the story.  The other part of the story, as spun by the Deeds campaign, is that Deeds out raised McDonnell in this last reporting period 2-1 – (according the Washington Post Deeds raised $3.4 million vs. $1.8 million for McDonnell for the most recent reporting period) showing that his campaign has gained an enormous amount of momentum.  That’s a hefty amount.

The rest of that story is that of the $3.4 million raised by the Deeds campaign, $500,000 came from the AFSCME (the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees), $500,000 came form the Democratic Governors Association, and $100,000 came from SEIU (Service Employees International Union).  When you get $1,100,000 from three donors – that makes it very easy to close the gap in the money race.

Really, regardless of how either side spins it – you’ll be spared you the break down, the campaign that does the most and best with what they’ve got will be the winners come November.  What stinks for both sides, are the intangibles that neither side has any control over.  Something could happen in the national environment that could be felt in Virginia, that could knock either of these fundraising titans on their butts.

Finally, since spin always is a part of these stories, here are 3 Virginia news articles, about the exact same facts, presented 3 very different ways.

Washington Post:
Deeds Set For Costly Fight for Governor
Democrat Raised Twice as Much as McDonnell in June

Winchester Star:
McDonnell takes financial lead in campaign

Staunton News Leader:
Deeds outraises McDonnell
Campaign finance reports due today

UPDATE: RGA sets up Virginia PAC to support McDonnell.  See the story.
