What Would Monty Brewster Do?

After this New York Times article on the upcoming New Jersey Governor’s contest, I couldn’t help but wonder…what would Monty Brewster do?  Nobody likes Democratic Governor Jon Corzine.  After having $10 million in negative ads dropped on his head, nobody like Republican challenger Chris Christie.  80% of voters have no idea who John Daggett is (do you?).

“I’m voting for the lesser of two evils,” Laurie Moss, 59, a secretary from Cherry Hill and a Republican, said in a follow-up interview, explaining that she favors the governor’s re-election though she thinks “he speaks with a forked tongue.” She added: “I’m not happy with our property taxes. I’m not happy with a lot of things. But Christie doesn’t offer anything better.”

Steven Schwartz, 55, a litigation consultant from Montvale and a Democrat, said Mr. Corzine has “mishandled the fiscal side” and done a poor job of working with legislators. But he said Mr. Christie has offered nothing but vague promises. “He’ll cut spending and taxes and restore the property tax rebate. How?” he said. “If ‘none of the above’ were an option, I would take it.”

New Jersey Horse Race

MSNBC’s First Read cites a Democratic poll that now puts the New Jersey Governor’s race as a 2 pt contest with Republican Chris Christie leading Democrat Jon Corzine 43% – 41%.

Key Findings

The Republican brand continues to be an anchor for Christie in the state. The Republican Party’s favorability rating remains decidedly negative, with just 32 percent of New Jersey voters rating it favorably against 43 percent who give it a negative rating. On the generic state legislative ballot, the Democratic candidates hold an 8-point edge on the Republicans, 45 to 37 percent. Christie’s negative ratings remain as high as his positives, with 35 percent viewing him favorably and 34 percent unfavorably.

If this race continues to be a close contest, and the generic state legislative ballot holds where it is, the Republican shot at winning a majority of seats in the New Jersey General Assembly will be very close. By many accounts legislative Republicans lead by Republican Leader Alex Decroce have done an outstanding job on recruitment, and continue to do a great job on the operational side of things with their campaigns. It is entirely possible that even with a Corzine victory, Republicans could pull off an upset in the legislative races in 2009.

Derailment in New Jersey

Nobody wants this Chris Christie loan thing to have a negative impact on other races in New Jersey – well except for New Jersey Democrats who are getting pummeled all over the state in other state races.  Right now, the Christie campaign strategy is to stay on message talking about Jersey, and not about petty personal issues that really have no bearing – and this loan thing really doesn’t – on the future of the Garden State.

So, expect Democrats (both New Jersey and national), and other ostensibly independent groups to start attempting to turn this act of personal kindness into a corruption issue by piling on the hyperbole.

New Jersey is a slippery state

Given what’s transpired in New Jersey this week.

A MAYOR, a rabbi, and an organ trafficker sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. But the mayors of the New Jersey cities of Hoboken, Secaucus and Ridgefield, a council president, two state assemblymen, numerous other public officials and political operatives, and five rabbis are not laughing. They are among 44 people charged in criminal complaints filed on Thursday July 23rd. The arrests were part of a ten-year federal investigation of both public corruption and an international money-laundering conspiracy. And, indeed, some organ selling.

The message and timing of the spot below couldn’t be better for Republican Chris Christie…and worse for incumbent Democrat Governor Jon Corzine.  Christie is already up 15pts on Corzine – the search results for “New Jersey” and “corruption” on Google and Bing, really won’t help either Democrats (though one Republican legislators was ensnared) generically in ‘Jersey, or Corzine specifically.

Waiting to see what happens

Republicans are holding back on proffering any invites for soon to be former Governor Sarah Palin to come to New Jersey and Virginia to campaign, while Democrats are following the same course for President Obama in those states.  The reason is simple – Republicans want to see the other shoe fall on the Palin resignation story (and probably how big and stinky it is) before they voluntarily hitch themselves to her cart.  And it’s a similar case for Democrats and the President.

While his personal numbers are reportedly high, his policies (s…t…i…m…u…l…) appear to be on the way to be being panned – so nobody wants to be linked to those horrible policies coming out of DC that will follow POTUS in his motorcade when he comes to town.  It’s not like you see Nancy Pelosi actively campaigning in Virginia or New Jersey these day is it?

Strategy for now…watch…wait…see.

UPDATE:  In New Jersey, where President Obama is headed next week to stump for Democrat Governor Jon Corzine, a new poll is out showing 79% of likely voters say their opinion of the President has nothing to do with who they support for Governor – be it Jon Corzine or Republican Chris Christie.

In Texas, Republican Governor Rick Perry says that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is “committed to campaigning” for his re-election.
